αn anthology of Tolis Nikiforou's poems with pictures by Julia Fortouni.

The Only Human Voice

Let Anthony claim
that Caesar's gashes
were mute mouths
in our days wounds
compose music
and write verse
they are the only human voice
while monotonously
without speaking
murderers grind their knives

Translated by Michael Mott and Domna Pastourmatzi
from Tolis Nikforou, Me ti Fotia sta Matia (With the Fire
in the Eyes), 1982, Balkan Visions, Visions International
No. 48, 1995.

Winter Sun, 2

As, up high, the grey roofs of the houses
still drenched with rain
are lit nostalgically
by the winter sun

as the distant mountain
rises and hangs above the sea
nearly touching the shore
in the transparency of the morning air

as the eyes of the cat
make the night bloom with small fires
so also does your smile blossom
between the walls and the asphalt road.

You are a green leaf
with veins damp from the evening dew
a subtle gesture that revives joy
a spoonful of sweet preserve
a glass of water on grandma's tray
in the gleaming neighbourhood courtyard.

U.F.O.
to Vasilis

Halcyons with resplendent colors
my distant ancestors
a flock of birds with wings exiled
from the unknown galaxy
soared in the great darkness
for light years and years
holding the seed of creation
firmly in their beak

and I come today
to speak to you with blood and light
I shoot deadly arrows into your heart
with the few crumbs from the miracles
today I come to paint
an imaginary bird on your forehead.
